HSBC profits down but still strong


HSBC Holdings PLC says profit rose 21 percent in 2007 despite taking a beating in North America. Vincent Cheng, Chairman of HSBC Asia Pacific, at the announcement of todays results. The company reports a profit of $19.1 billion compared with $15.8 billion in 2006. Pretax profits in North America fell 98 percent to $91 million compared to 4.67 billion in 2006.
