“Cancer usually occurs in middle ages, when people are in their fifties, but lately we’ve been observing that it is being increasingly observed in young people. Now there are cancers which are mostly seen in children, but what worries me is that we are seeing types of cancers among the youth that are typically found in adults. I’ve seen colon cancer at age 14 and people in their early twenties last year, which is alarming,†said Dr. Shafiq-ur-Rahman, the head of surgery at Civil.
Giving an age-wise distribution of cancer patients registered at Civil from the year 2004 to 2009, he informed that most cases at his unit were between the ages of 30 and 40 (800), while there’s a rise in cancer in the 20 to 30 (488) and 10 to 20 (231) age groups. Also, while 542 cancer patients registered for treatment at the facility in 2004, the number stood at 732 in 2009. The top three cancers for men in 2009 were head and neck, blood and GIT, while for women it was breast, head and neck and FGT.
